The mission of the Upper Colorado River Authority, acting within the parameters of its charter, is to enhance the water quality of the streams and tributaries located within the watershed of the Upper Colorado River Authority.
Watershed Restoration Projects
The UCRA has been actively engaged in ecological restoration since 1998 with the Texas Water Development Board funded, "North Concho River Watershed Brush Control Planning Assessment and Feasibility Study". The study that determined brush control over an entire watershed could conserve significant amounts of water. In 1999 the first phase of a ten year project was initiated with a study funded by the Texas State Soil & Water Conservation Board to develop and implement a monitoring and research project to assess the efficacy of the North Concho River Pilot Project. Subsequent projects were funded over the years.
The Twin Buttes Basin Restoration Project was completed in 2012. Approximately 9000 acres of mesquite, willow baccharis and salt cedar were treated between 2010 and 2012. The project goal was water conservation and ecosystem restoration. Project Partners included the UCRA, City of San Angelo, US Bureau of Reclamation and the Texas State Soil & Water Conservation Board.
The O.C. Fisher Lake Ecosystem Restoration Project, funded by the US Army Corp of Engineers and the Texas State Soil & Water Conservation Board, was completed in 2013. Project partners included the UCRA, City of San Angelo, Texas State Soil & Water Conservation Board, Angelo State University Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, US Fish and Wildlife Service and Texas AgriLife Research.
The UCRA and Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research were under contract in 2014 & 2015 with the Texas State Soil & Water Conservation Board to complete a feasibility study simulating brush control and subsequent water yields in the O.H. Ivie lake basin. The report is complete and was submitted to the State Board. UCRA has submitted a request for funding to begin a new project in 2018.
